Sauron’s Orb is watching you. Your data in exchange for a little money. That’s the trick Wordlcoin found to launch its operation centered on thedigital identity. All over the world, their Orbs scan people’s irises in order to feed the data centers of Sam Altman’s new company, the creator behind ChatGPT. Argentina like so many other countries has decided to react. Here’s how.
Artificial intelligence: a necessary step for overweening ambitions?
At the beginning of 2023, ChatGPT was launched with great fanfare. The public was suddenly aware of the extraordinary potential of AI. Suddenly, everything became possible with artificial intelligence transformed into a teacher and dialogue partner. It could teach you how to code a website, fill in your paperwork, tie your shoes and count in pairs.
Behind this revolution was a man by the name of Sam Altmanowner of the company OpenAI. Little did we know, however, that this artificial intelligence project was in fact a first step towards a much greater ambition, Worldcoin. By highlighting the potential of ia, by reminding people that their abilities were not so extraordinary, not so unique, phase 2 of the plan could begin.
A few months later, Sam Altman launched Worldcoin. Equipped with an arsenal of Orbs, the idea was to create a digital identity for each individual. This would certify their humanity within the gigantic, teeming universe that the Internet had become. The public is encouraged via payment in WLDWordlcoin’s token, to provide the company with its data. This, of course, raises privacy issues. Governments around the world are beginning to be concerned by the company’s somewhat hasty methods.

Argentina investigates Worldcoin shares
In Kenya, we learned that Worldcoin’s activities had stopped altogethers. The company’s premises were raided by the authorities. In France, England and Germany, the company is also under close investigation. And Argentina is not to be outdone.
L’Argentine Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP) has begun its investigation into Wordlcoin’s activities. Its aim is to ensure the legality of the company’s actions. And, of course, to protect the privacy of its citizens. To this end, the regulatory body is requesting detailed information on the company’s control and security processes. The aim is to ensure that these processes are in place to protect the data collected.
« Citizens have the right, whenever personal data is required, to obtain clear and accessible information on the use and purpose of this data collection and associated processes, all the more so when sensitive data, such as biometric data, is involved. »
AAIP, at one of their statements last August 8
The action is all the more necessary as Worldcoin activities have already been underway for many months in the cities of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza and Rio Negro.
In a email sent to our Coindesk colleagues, the Worldcoin company defends itself:
« The project complies with all current laws and regulations regarding the process of collecting personal data in the markets where Worldcoin is available, including (…) the Personal Data Protection Act 25.326 established in Argentina. »
Although Worldcoin asserts that it complies with all regulations, the speed with which its Orbs have spread around the world is surprising. That’s why more and more government authorities are investigating their actions. Behind the pious wish to ensure digital identity for all on the Internetis the company concealing other ambitions?
