While London has traditionally dominated the European tech scene with the most venture capital investment and the highest proportion of unicorns, Paris is hot on its heels.
According to the 2022 report State of European Tech by Atomico, France has overtaken the UK in capitalizing on the public technology market.
What’s more, French startups have become among the best-funded and are on an upward trajectory compared with their UK counterparts, where investment has fallen by 22% in one year.
Le Journal du Coin brings you this promotional article in collaboration with Jobbio.
A visa for the future
Part of this success is due to the French government’s plan to promote technology and foster its startup scene. The « France 2030 » plan of 30 billion euros, which was established in 2021 by President Emmanuel Macron, aims to create 100 French technology unicorns by 2030.
Until now, the number of unicorns in Paris is 28 and according to Startup Blink, there are now more than 8,000 startups in the city.
The French Tech visa, announced in 2019, was developed to attract tech entrepreneurs and talent to Paris rather than more established cities like London and New York.
This visa is valid for four years. The only requirements are an employment contract of at least three months’ duration and that the salary is at least twice the French minimum wage (around €20,000) to ensure a salary of at least €40,295 a year.
According to Startup Genome, the average salary for software engineers in Paris is $48,000 (€44,000) per year, above the global average of $46,000 (€42,756) per year.

Investments abound in the tech sector
Beyond staff logistics, the focus on AI and fintech is also helping to support France’s efforts to strengthen its technology ecosystem.
In June, at the VivaTech conference, Mr. Macron announced an additional investment of 500 million euros in AI to create Artificial Intelligence « champions ». Moreover, €40 million will be dedicated to attracting more capital from private investors to develop open source AI systems for French projects. « We believe in open-source ».he declared.
One of these « champions » is Mistral.aian open source competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which raised an impressive €105 million in its first four weeks and counts former Meta and Alphabet employees among its staff.
