The Harpagon of crypto? The good news on the scams and others hacks in crypto, it’s a decrease in the number of events and a significant drop in the volume of illicit products handled by criminals at the start of 2023. But if we’ve reached this point, it’s not thanks to the Holy Spirit of blockchain or to the awareness of crooks, but above all to the discreet and oh-so-essential work of the white hats. These hackers who’ve crossed over to the light side of the force work for the common good and the security of protocols, either alone in their office or within a specialized company. And this is just one of them, Decuritywhich discovered a potentially significant flaw in the DxSale who was expecting to be rewarded with millions of dollars at risk. But not everything went according to plan! Here’s the story of a good deed that didn’t quite pay off.

Decurity discovers potential bankruptcy worth over $5 million

It all began on June 28th last Wednesday, on a Wednesday that looks a bit like any other day, the teams from Decurity run their in-house software, the DeFimon. The latter analyzes smart contracts and suspicious transactions in search of potential vulnerabilities that could be used to hacks, thefts or scams. And just that morning, someone puts their finger on a problematic unverified smart contract at DxSale. After some digging, it turns out that a major vulnerability has been discovered that poses a significant threat to funds deposited on the BSC via this protocol.

Immediately, the Decurity contact those of DxSale to inform them of the problem. But the reception was rather cold, and at first nobody took them seriously. Eventually, with a little persuasion, a discussion channel is created and Decurity’s experts pass on a package of information that convinces DxSale thatthere really is a flaw. And it’s not a small one, since the fault concerns no less than 21,600 BNB wrapped or 5.2 million dollars at the current market price!

DxSale protocol offers only $500 reward! Ingratitude or greed?

But from this point on, and according to information reported by Decurity, DxSale is going to demonstrate bad faith in managing the problem. First, they minimize the impact of the discovery and try to drown the fish before supposedly finding alternative solutions, then finally making a proposal to reward the work of the white hats : 500 dollars. But this little tip doesn’t go down well with the security specialist and CEO, Omar Ganievtakes offense publicly of this amount :

« It’s clearly a surprise, but also a disappointment to receive such a proposal, especially after trying to deny the importance of the problem. »

It’s clear from his comments that the CEO is annoyed by DxSale’s reaction, and he’s back at it again:

« A thank you without financial compensation would have been a better response, but even that our researchers didn’t get. »

Finally, Omar Ganiev will take advantage of the situation to send a message subliminal to all the protocols of DeFi think about setting aside funds for « cases like this ». He even goes so far as to say that serious risk management means allocating money to researchers like those on his team. Otherwise, the famous white hats may eventually become discouraged, leaving their malevolent counterparts free to indulge in their favorite pastime: steal your cryptocurrencies!
