Misfires at the start? Yesterday was full of good news for the crypto project ofArkham Intelligence. Not only the ARKM token had to be listed on Binancebut its teams presented their new platform On-Chain Intelligence Exchange. But since then, the cryptosphere has been abuzz about a mix-up. L’e-mail address of its customers, used for referral links, could in fact be recovered.

User e-mails that are easy to obtain

While everything was going well for the project Arkham Intelligence until yesterday, more bad news tarnished its launch on Binance’s Launchpad. According to several crypto-media, including a publication of The Block, some e-mail addresses of customers can be made public due to sponsorship links decodable.

These last links have been shared by users for aairdrop of ARKM tokens to take place on Tuesday July 18 2023. But customers using these links would have discovered that their email address could be obtained in cleartext from these sponsorship shares. This decoding could be done quite easily, with even tools available online.

Making e-mail addresses public can be problematic because of hackers and other scammerswho can send phishing (phishing) and other similar attempts to steal users’ cryptocurrencies. Ironically, Arkham’s services offer winnings in exchange for sensitive wallet address data.

Arkham CEO explains and apologizes for snag

In a tweet published on July 11, the CEO of Arkham, Miguel Morelwas keen to explain the situation, while at the same time presenting apologies to users who might feel aggrieved by the situation, a situation that once again puts privacy at the heart of the debate :

« It has been made public that our referral links contain a Base 64 encoded version of the referrer’s e-mail (…) This was a means of attributing registrations made using a referral link. (…) We do not use them for any purpose other than communicating with users and attributing referrals.
We should have changed this system after the exponential increase in the number of users. In future, all sponsorship links will contain an encrypted version of the sponsor’s e-mail address (…). This change is already underway.
We’re not perfect, but we always strive to do what’s best for our users. (…) We’re here to make cryptocurrency a more transparent and fair place, where normal people have access to tools and information that were previously only available to large institutions. »

Indeed, apart from specialized police departments and large American agencies, private individuals had no real solutions for trace exchanges on blockchain networks. If you’re still interested in the project despite this unfortunate mix-up, find out more about an interview with CEO Miguel Morel here.
