Buying NFT on your iphone isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Game developers are gradually embracing NFT technology. Epic games has no intention of sitting on the sidelines with regard to this potential-filled subject. However, there are still many legal barriers. And Apple is fighting to put the brakes on this innovative drive to short-circuit the established rules on its hardware. Here are some explanations.

Apple vs Epic Games: the NFT war

Crypto afficionados hoping for a mass App Store arrival NFTs by the thousands can take a hike. Before blockchain technology is everywhere on our iPhones, we’ll have to wait and see. Gaming companies will also have to wait before they can offer their new products. At least if they try to escape Apple’s planned financial channels.

Indeed, in the United States, Elena KaganSupreme Court Justice, has just published deny a request fromEpic Games. The video game company wanted to be able to use payment methods outside the Apple environment from now on. The attempt failed. The judge gave no explanation for his refusal.

In reality, the current concern is as follows. Epic Games wants to use different in-app payment methods to those provided by Apple. For these are systematically accompanied by a 30% tax. Indeed, as soon as we get involved in NFTs and the finance surrounding cryptocurrencies, taking such a tax into account would become prohibitive and prevent any transactions. For example, it is currently impossible for developers like Epic Game to explore NFT technology and offer it to the general public on Apple smartphones.

Democratization delayed but not cancelled

This 30% tax is also a thorn in the side of all crypto startups wishing to export their products to Apple’s interface. As a result, purchasing NFT via Apple’s iOs interface is currently impossible. Not only because of the tax, which would discourage anyone from taking the plunge. But also because purchases can currently only be made in fiat currencies (euros, dollars). Only exchange apps like Binance are not affected by this limit.

However, Epic Games has reason to believe. Last April, the courts validated their requestdeclaring that Apple was in violation of the law by preventing developers from using other payment channels.

Today, however, the judge has just refused the immediate implementation of this court decision, which could have allowed Apple to extract itself from this taxed circuit as of today. As a result, Apple has a few months’ reprieve to work on its defense and appeal the decision. And Epic Games’ ambitions have been delayed.

Epic Games had argued that the delay would penalize them in the development of their future products. Indeed, in the absence of a definitive decision, development would come to a standstill and consumers would become impatient. Unfortunately, their justification was not enough. So we’ll have to wait a little longer before we can expect NFT to invade our iPhones. On the Google Play side, however, the music is quite different, as the has just opened its arms to NFT last July.
